Plans unveiled for new Broken Hill Mental Health Facility

The Minister for Mental Health, Rose Jackson, has unveiled plans for a new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit “which will provide a modern and contemporary therapeutic space for people with mental health needs, their families, carers and staff.”

The facility will also provide some help for people with alcohol and other drug problems that can be closely intertwined with mental health issues. It will be built on the Broken Hill Base Hospital campus in Thomas Street, close to other related health services. The Broken Hill Health Service Redevelopment also includes a $10 million upgrade to the Emergency Department of the hospital. Construction is scheduled to start in 2024.

This new facility will be welcomed by the local community and many surrounding areas, which have been sadly lacking in healthcare facilities for people living with mental health problems. It is estimated mental health conditions are likely to affect around one in four people at some time in their lives, which can also affect family and friends. Mental health related emergency presentations in hospital emergency departments are on the rise and many people living with mental health conditions are unable to get the support they need.

This situation is worse for people in the bush, many of whom have difficulty in accessing mental health care exacerbated by the distances they have to travel in order to get that specialised care. In the Barwon electorate there is only one  Mental Health Inpatient Unit in Broken Hill, providing only short-term care for adults, menaing there are few beds for the people liivng in an area covering 356,000 square kilometres of New South Wales.

Funding for a new, state-of-the-art facility is a good first step toward plugging some of the many gaps in mental health care in Western NSW. We thank the Minister for helping to bring better mental health care to Barwon and look forward to more projects to come.

FWLHD Chief Executive, Mr Brad Astill is encouraging people to  “view the concept designs and speak directly with the project team at a series of information sessions in July,” Pop-up sessions will be held as follows: Monday 10 July 2023, 3.30pm – 5.00pm Outside Coles Supermarket, South St, Broken Hill Tuesday 11 July 2023, 9.00am – 10.30am Westside Plaza, 5 Galena St, Broken Hill Tuesday 11 July 2023, 11.00am - 12.30pm Main Foyer, Broken Hill Health Service, Thomas St, Broken Hill
