Disallowing the Firearms Buyback

The firearms buyback would be overturned in NSW if a disallowance motion by the Member for Barwon, Roy Butler, is successful. 

The Firearms Amendment (Transitional Provisions) Regulation 2026 provides the regulatory framework that allows the firearms buyback. It was published on 5th August and tabled in the House today. Parliamentary rules allow for any regulation to be disallowed within 15 sitting days of being tabled in the House.  

Mr Butler moved a motion to disallow the firearms regulations today in NSW Parliament. The disallowance motion will be debated in parliament tomorrow. 

“The proposed firearms buyback is an enormous waste of taxpayer money for no benefit,” said Mr Butler. “The problems are being caused by the illegal imported firearms used by western Sydney gangs, not the firearms locked up in the safes of registered owners.” 

“This buyback does nothing to improve public safety but has a huge impact on many law-abiding people,” said Mr Butler. 

The NSW Labor government rushed the firearms laws through NSW Parliament within a few days last December with the support of the Liberal Party, the Greens and city independents.  

“Since these so-called firearms reforms were rushed through NSW Parliament last December, numerous unintended consequences have come to light along with the steep cost of the buyback,” said Mr Butler. 

"I’m hoping the Liberals under Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane and the National Party will support the disallowance motion and stand with lawful firearms owners,” said Mr Butler.
